In response to today’s committee vote advancing bipartisan legislation that would create an independent and bipartisan commission to investigate the January 6th assault on our U.S. Capitol, the National Council on Election Integrity released the following statement: “Today’s action by the House Rules Committee was a critical step towards getting an objective understanding of what happened on January 6th so this never happens again. This vote sets the stage for a bipartisan breakthrough moment for Congress. Our country needs a comprehensive and objective investigation of the events leading up to and on January 6th to prevent future attacks. “At a time when bipartisanship is often jettisoned in favor of partisan politics, the creation of this commission can be a unifying moment to bring Republicans and Democrats together. Americans have a right to the truth, and a properly structured and resourced 9/11-style commission is an essential step for Congress to take. “This commission’s scope should be focused solely on the causes and events of January 6th; be equipped with subpoena power; and be evenly bipartisan to ensure that all Americans have faith in the investigation and its recommendations. “We applaud House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS) and Ranking Member John Katko (R-NY) for coming together on this matter of national importance. This is not an issue of right or left, but of right and wrong. We strongly urge every member of Congress to put country above party and support the creation of a January 6th Commission.” |
