Hundreds of bills have been introduced by state lawmakers that will change voting laws. In response, the National Council on Election Integrity released the following statement:
“Across the country, state legislators have introduced legislation that would politicize election administration by taking power away from local election officials and putting it in the hands of partisan state legislators. As a recent study shows, some proposals even allow state legislatures to overturn the will of the people.
“Further politicizing election administration, and compromising the independence of election officials, is the wrong direction to go. These efforts should be rejected.
“As 2020 showed, America has thousands of bipartisan election officials who successfully manage our elections. Last year, a record number of Americans were able to safely vote in an election that was smooth and without irregularities. If some of these bills had been law prior to the 2020 election, the result could have been chaos.
“It is critical that leaders from across the political spectrum oppose these misguided proposals fueled by false claims about the outcome of the election. These claims undermine Americans’ faith in our system and institutions.”
